About our Duncan Chapter

This chapter exists for the purpose of promoting PATRIOTISM, preserving AMERICAN HISTORY and EDUCATION to help secure America's future through better education. Our members are from Comanche, Duncan and Marlow in Stephens County, but we invite and welcome anyone interested in DAR from the surrounding counties of Jefferson, Cotton or Grady to join us for these purposes.

Patriotism and Education

Duncan Chapter reaches out to our schools and community, especially during Constitution Week (September 17-23) every year. We go into all 5th grade classrooms. Martha Washington and Betsy Ross speak to them about George Washington and the forming of our Constitution. While there with the students and teachers, we give the students bookmarks of the Preamble of the Constitution or The American's Creed, give teachers information on the Constitution and helpful websites to collect more information. We have given a gift of "A More Perfect Union" DVD to all middle schools and high schools. we request and receive proclamations from all 7 towns and incorporated communities in Stephens County, place posters in town businesses, create displays in libraries, send information to radio stations and local newspapers for publishing, ask local banks to put Constitution Week information on their Marques, contact Church's to put emphasis on Constitution Week in their church bulletins and to ring their church bells for "Bells Across America" on September 17th.

We also participate in American History Essay Contests, Christopher Columbus Essay Contests and Good Citizen Award Contest. Proudly, we almost always have at least one State winner to honor at our OSDAR State Conference.

History

We are committed to the preservation of our local history. As a chapter we support the Prairie House Project and continue to do so by being docents, helping with special events, teas, etc. One of our members Gail Loafman, is the Founder and Chairmen of the Board of Directors for this project. She is also considered the local historian who has written numerous articles on old homes in the county for the Duncan Banner and a Board Member for the Stephens County Historical Society. Gail is responsible for having out Stephens County Genealogical Library building the the Prairie House put on the National Register of Historic Places. On June 4, 2007 she was awarded the NSDAR "National Historical Preservation Medal."

Veterans and National Defense

Because we are always mindful and proud of our soldiers and veterans, we collect needed supplies during the year and donate them where they are needed. we participate in Veteran's Parades and take part in official flag burning ceremonies for old worn out flags collected and conduced by the American Legion of Duncan. This year we hope to participate in the "Wreaths Across America" project.
