Kilihoti Chapter
|

Organization of the Kilihoti Chapter:
The original Sachem Sequoyah Chapter, was organized in McAlester, Oklahoma, on November 13, 1912 with twenty-one members. The group met in the parlor of the Doss House. This chapter disbanded on February 1, 1928.
The Kilihoti Chapter was organized June 9, 1966, in McAlester, Oklahoma, in the old Choctaw Nation. Kilihoti held its first luncheon meeting on that date at the McHoma Lodge in McAlester. Mrs. Melvin R. Race of Shawnee, Oklahoma, was the Organizing State Regent. Regent Race installed the following ladies as officers for the new chapter: Mrs. Otis S. Duran, Regent; Mrs. Margaret Adams, Vice Regent; Mrs. Stanton N. Stallings, Secretary; Mrs. Grover C. Phillips, Treasurer; and Mrs. James G. Mitchell, Registrar.
Among the other 18 charter members present at the first meeting were: Mrs. Arch Thompson, Mrs. W. E. McGowan, Mrs. James Newman, Mrs. Bryant G. Ward, Mrs. L.S. Willour, Mrs. Harold G. Minyard, Mrs. Lawrence Newman, Mrs. M. L. Henry, Miss Mildred Toaz, Mrs. Olin V. Lewis, Mrs. R. O. Green, Mrs. Lowell G. Rogers, and Mrs. Jack Shields. These ladies came from five cities in Oklahoma, including: McAlester, Kiowa, Hartshorne, Eufaula, and Oklahoma City. Mrs. Duran worked diligently completing proper paperwork for the group to become members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and for the chapter to be set up according to the national bylaws.

Objectives of the Society are to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty. The Kilihoti Chapter of today strives to uphold the Objectives of the Society, to provide leadership for the communities in which their Daughters live, and to maintain the ideals of freedom throughout their communities. To aid in letting travelers know about the chapter in the McAlester, OK area, a sign was erected at the entrance of town and another sign just outside the Ramada Inn. |
