Chapter Information

The Okemah Chapter meets on the third Tuesday of each month, September through June. We encourage prospective members to visit one of our meetings so we can tell you more about our chapter and our special interests.

The Daughters of the American Revolution are committed to God, Home, and Country, and the promotion and preservation of education, history, and patriotism in our schools and our communities.

Short History of Okemah
	Okemah was named for Kickapoo Chief, Okemah. The agreeable and fine temperament of this old chief was the reason the town was named for him. Chief Okemah was noted for honesty, integrity, and uprightness. The Creek Indian word "okemah" means "high man" or "person of high stature."

The Creek tribe, which had suffered tremendous loss of life on the Trail of Tears from Alabama and Georgia, established its capital in Okemah in 1868.
	Well-known residents have included: Woody Guthrie, composer and singer; and William Reid Pogue, astronaut. Community festivals include Pioneer Day in April and the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Festival in July.

Historic sites and museums: Territory Town Museum and the Creek Council House Museum.

The town was once reported to have been surrounded by barbed-wire, to keep out the longhorns grazing on the surrounding plains.
