Muldrow, Oklahoma |
| The TALKING LEAVES CHAPTER of the Oklahoma Society Daughters of the American Revolution, was named in honor of SEQUOYAH, a Cherokee Indian. He was born about 1760 in eastern Tennessee, from a family respected for its knowledge of tribal traditions and religion. As he met many white people, he became fascinated with their method of communicating by writing. SEQUOYAH spent twelve years developing a syllabary for his people. Not having access to paper, he wrote on leaves, hence the name, "TALKING LEAVES." This was completed in 1821. His objective was to record the ancient tribal culture in a permanent form. He moved to Indian Territory in the 1830s. |
