Our Chapter History

Abraham Coryell Chapter was organized on February 1, 1945, with 15 members. May C. Burnham was the Organizing Regent. Mrs. Floyd Booton, the last of the original organizing member of Abraham Coryell Chapter, passed away peacefully Friday, September 29, 2006. She was 104 year old.  She faithfully paid her membership each year since she joined in 1945.

Mrs. Boonton remembers that in 1945 the chapter dues were $5 a year, of which $2 went to the national organization. At an early meeting each of the members related the service given by her Revolutionary War ancestor. The group then discussed which ancestor had the most interesting history and voted to name the chapter after Abraham Coryell, ancestor of Mary Perrin Coppock.

It is certified through the records of the office of the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey that Abraham Coryell served in the militia as a private in Capt. John Phillips Company, 3rd Regiment, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Legend has it that Abraham Coryell conveyed George Washington through the ice at Coryell Ferry, and George Washington gave him a note for $2500 to be paid by the United States for his services, providing the government ever became able to do so. The note, so the story goes, was destroyed by fire.

The chapter holds genealogical workshops, including instruction for beginners and for prospective DAR members. Abraham Coryell Chapter works closely with members of the Craig County Genealogical Society giving regular volunteer time in the genealogical section of the Vinita Library.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, September through May.
