Established in 1907, Blanchard is a small town in Oklahoma that has grown to become a modern community with a nostalgic downtown business district, modern shopping areas, beautifully developed residential areas, nearby medical facilities, and an affordable cost of living. The Christmas parade and the Independence Day celebration also promote civic pride. Downtown Blanchard is located in Township 8 North, Range 4 West, Section 30, in northwestern McClain County. It was originally organized by the Canadian Valley Construction Company which was planning to build a railroad. However, the company filed for bankruptcy and the railroad came under the control of the Oklahoma Central Railroad which also had financial problems. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads took over and completed the line. Blanchard consists of a nucleus of approximately one square mile of streets arranged in a grid shape located on top of a gentle hill surrounded by new agricultural and development areas within a radius of approximately 4 miles (6 km) from downtown.
Downtown Blanchard consists of houses (approximately half built before 1960), several churches, and a historic downtown Main Street area with antique stores, restaurants, city services, a senior center and a gym. On the outskirts of the city center there are schools, businesses and modern housing subdivisions which tend to be low-density lots (usually one to 5 acres) (20,000 m²). The average age is 39.8 years (37.2 in Oklahoma). Blanchard has four high schools with an average enrollment (200 out of approximately 1460 students). The elementary school is recently built and houses from pre-kindergarten to second grade.
There is also a middle school for grades 3 through 5 and a middle school for grades 6 through 8.Blanchard has the Blanchard Public Library which is part of the Pioneer Library System encompassing many of the suburbs of Oklahoma City.
